The South at Work

The South of England has a host of historic industries, the signs of many which are with us today; glass in the Surrey Weald and iron in Sussex and Kent. Shipbuilding in harbours and creeks around the coast; agricultural industries of mills and cart makers, hop oasts and harness makers. There are also the industries associated with the national location, the seaside piers and entertainment centres but also military industries at naval bases and fortifications. This talk looks at the trades associated with raw materials, with manufacturing and with the service industries of the 21st century.
